What to Wear for Family Photos
Yay! You’ve booked your family photo session!
Now comes the fun of selecting the perfect outfits to help you feel your best and pull your family’s look together. We love this part!
Read on for some helpful tips and inspo photos.
Start here
Stumped on where to start? A good rule of thumb is to decide on one family member’s outfit and then choose clothes for the remaining family members based on that style and color. Selecting 2-3 key colors overall can make things easier too.
consider your colors
The best colors to wear for family pictures are ones that match your family’s personality, photo surroundings and season.
Natural or neutral colors always work well with outdoor photoshoots.
Bright pops of colors in small doses can add personality into family photos, but you want to make sure they’re not overly distracting. Try to avoid neon colors in general.
Avoid busy patterns and logos
We recommend steering clear of very bold patterns and clothing with logos or graphics. Subtle plaid and stripes can add visual interest. Vertical instead of horizontal stripes are often more flattering. Choose clothing that fits well and isn’t overly baggy.
Add visual appeal
Easily add interest by playing with different fabrics like velvet, corduroy, satin and wool. Even a patterned scarf combined with a dress can change the entire image. Think beyond just colors and patterns - incorporating texture is a great trick!
Coordinating > matching
Worry less about fully matching each family member and think more about complimentary outfits. Try coordinating clothing instead by using different shades from the same color palette or pulling a solid color to use from the stripe of someone’s patterned shirt.
comfort is key
When dressing children, try to select something comfortable that they love and makes them feel like a star! Offering to let them choose between two options (that you’ve already pre-approved) may be helpful.
head to toe
Think through each family member’s full look from head to toe - shoes and accessories are important considerations too!
A few final tips:
Lip gloss and powder for shine are helpful
Try not to tie hair back too tightly
Avoid chipped nail polish
And there you have it!
